MyBackgroundCheck.com Seeks to Make Online Dating Safer with Personal Background Checks

by Blake Forrester 4/25/2011 11:16:00 AM

Redding, CA, April 21, 2011—Online dating can be fun and exciting—and potentially, very dangerous. A southern California woman recently filed charges against a suitor she met through a popular online dating site. She claims that the man sexually assaulted her on their second date—and unbeknownst to her, he had a criminal history of sexual offenses.

A simple background check makes a criminal history available—but dating sites are not obligated to obtain background check reports for their members. MyBackgroundCheck.com—sister site to industry-leading background check company Pre-employ.com—is making it easier for online daters to make more informed choices.

By visiting www.mybackgroundcheck.com/OnlineDatingTips, any individual can quickly and easily purchase a personal background check and then share the confidential results with anyone of his or her choosing. The background checks are affordably priced—around $10.00 each—and are easy to request and to share.

"Most popular online dating services do not screen their members. That responsibility is generally left to the individual," said Robert Mather, CEO of MyBackgroundCheck.com. "By developing a system that enables users to easily purchase and share background check information, we're doing our best to inspire confidence in the dating community, to encourage personal responsibility and to promote safe practices."

While a background check doesn't guarantee safety, it can illuminate any criminal history and provide an accurate picture of an individual's personal background.

"There's simply no reason for online daters to compromise safety by skipping a background check," adds Mather. "It's a simple step that can go a long way toward protecting against individuals who have a history of dangerous or questionable activity."

At Least 1-in-29 College Students Have Criminal Records

by Staff Writer 12/22/2009 3:22:00 PM

Actual cases of crime may be higher, as juvenile records are not reportable or included in this study

REDDING, CA, December 22, 2009 — Students with criminal records could be sitting in every classroom at colleges and universities in the United States, according to a new report. A nationwide study by MyBackgroundCheck.com, a leading supplier of criminal background checks for students and faculty members, revealed that approximately one out of every 29 college students across the nation had some type of previous criminal record.

The study of 13,859 students in 125 universities, career colleges, nursing schools, and other educational institutions found a variety of convictions from across the nation. The study only included criminal convictions and excluded arrest information that did not have a disposition. The study also excluded any charges that were dismissed by prosecutors. The convictions included in this study did not include juvenile records, which are not accessible to the public in most situations. Some states, counties, or parishes categorize crimes differently. For example, a conviction of theft in one court may be considered a conviction of fraud in another. The convictions uncovered were organized into the following categories and percentages:

  • Child Molestation (2.4%);
  • Sexual Abuse (5.2%);
  • Assault (4%);
  • Drug Possession (7.4%);
  • Theft (8.8%);
  • Fraud (2.7%);
  • Driving Violations (60%); and
  • Disorderly Conduct (9.5%).

“Parents sending children off to colleges and universities should closely view the background screening policies of those educational institutions,” stated Robert Mather, CEO of MyBackgroundCheck.com. “A university can easily check criminal records of instructors or students for free,” Mather added. “There is no financial reason not to do so.”

Universities can find out more about this nationwide program by visiting http://www.mybackgroundcheck.com/Business/ClinicalDirectors.aspx.

"We strongly encourage all concerned parents and alumni to forward this information to their children's school administrators and alumni associations," said Mather.

“The days of secrecy surrounding previous criminal activity in a university are gone,” Mather continued. “In today’s world, parents, faculty, and students wish to be educated about the criminal convictions of their roommates, students, or instructors and, at the least, engage in conversation surrounding the facts, beginning with the question: Is there a criminal in the classroom?”

One Out of Five Criminal Record Disputes Involve Identity Theft

by Blake Forrester 9/30/2009 9:53:00 AM

False background checks from possible identity theft or misidentification as described by CNN (video here) is a national problem that occurs nearly one out of five times a report is contested. This according to research by MyBackgroundCheck.com a national consumer background check company that has screened over a million consumers for criminal activity.

In a report first aired September 29, CNN reporter Gerri Willis interviewed a woman who described how her husband's dream job turned into a nightmare because of false information found on his pre-employment background check.

"Unfortunately, the case described in the CNN report is not unusual, and a recent study shows nearly one in five disputed background checks contain false information attributed to identity theft or misidentification" stated Robert Mather, CEO of MyBackgroundCheck.com. "Over one million consumers have purchased background checks through us, many to help in the job seeking process."

The research focused on consumers that purchased their own background check or had a background check procured through a prospective employer and contested the results of the report.

The study of disputed background checks revealed that the reasons for the disputes were:

  • Criminal Identity theft or not their record -- 21%
  • Some Criminal records dismissed others reported correctly (partial dispute/correction) -- 16%
  • Untruthful applicant, record was reported correctly -- 16%
  • Charges were reduced/dismissed or expunged and should not be reported -- 14%
  • Court error (wrong criminal record was retrieved from files) -- 12%
  • Not allowed to be reported by law for employment purposes (CA Marijuana, over 7 yrs in some states etc.) -- 11%
  • Other -- 9%

A multitude of State and Federal laws protect job applicants from error and mandate potential employers as well as the agency that investigated your background check and sold the report correct the mistakes at no cost to applicants.

A list of these laws and the potential penalties to employers or background check agencies violating them can be obtained for free by emailing info@mybackgroundcheck.com and requesting publication "24p: laws protecting the rights of consumers during the background check process."

MyBackgroundCheck.com Launches New Re-Designed Website Offering Personal Background Checks

by Blake Forrester 6/26/2009 1:54:00 PM

Website for Leading Personal Background Check Provider Offers Exciting New Features, Resources, and Interactivity To Help Members Control Information, Find Work, and Guard Against Identity Theft.

ANDERSON, CA (June 26, 2009) – MyBackgroundCheck.com – a leading provider of consumer requested background checks – recently announced the launching of a more user-friendly and interactive website with new features that give members the ability to view, manage, share, and protect their own "personal background check" information while also helping jobseekers find work and consumers guard against identity theft. Video tutorials, FAQs, and other resources detailing these improvements are available at http://www.mybackgroundcheck.com/order/NewFeatures.aspx.

MyBackgroundCheck.com helps individuals perform personal background checks on themselves to use as jobseekers, students, tenants, volunteers, parents, friends, and consumers. Since jobseekers can benefit by requesting their own pre-employment background check for potential employers, the company is in a position to help the more than 14 million unemployed workers in the U.S. in their efforts to find a job. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) recently reported that over 80 percent of large companies and a rapidly growing number of smaller employers currently perform background checks.

“Job applicants in nearly all fields should expect to undergo a background check, and they should be proactive in knowing exactly what a pre-employment screening will show,” says company Founder and CEO Robert Mather. “MyBackgroundCheck.com allows individuals to run a search on themselves to make sure the information is accurate. The results are posted on a secure website that can only be accessed through a code that can then be released to an unlimited number of potential employers. Not only does this ensure security and privacy,” Mather adds, “but it makes employers sit up and take notice that you are thinking a step ahead of the rest of the field.”

MyBackgroundCheck.com also provides protection against the rising threat of identity theft – which according to Javelin Research affected nearly 10 million Americans in 2008 – by allowing individuals to view their criminal records and credit scores in their background checks. With a MyBackgroundCheck.com account, members can ensure that their Personally Identifying Information (PII) is current, secure, and accurate by using new features, resources, and interactivity:

  • Invite other users to view and share background check reports.
  • Access common features and recent activities quickly and easily.
  • View and share public profiles, send messages, and search for users.
  • Find answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs) on background checks.
  • Receive background check news and special offers for products and services.
  • View video tutorials about how to use their MyBackgroundCheck.com account.
  • Provide feedback, share ideas, and make suggestions for improving the website.

National Non-Profit Group Teams with MyBackgroundCheck.com for Background Checks

by Staff Writer 8/12/2008 9:59:00 AM

August 12, 2008

National Council of Non-Profit Associations (NCNA) has partnered with MyBackgroundCheck.com, a leading consumer background check portal, in an effort to provide a complete risk management program to the non-profit industry. MyBackgroundCheck.com has introduced the Volunteer Tracking System (VTS), which comprehensively tracks volunteers in a network-like system, enabling a thorough, cost-efficient background check program for all member organizations.

Non-profit organizations strive to benefit millions of people throughout the world. With rising concern for the safety of those served by non-profit groups, background checks are necessary to keeping predators out of these organizations and protecting the back bone of the non-profit sector. Depending mostly on donated funds, background check programs seem out of reach for many organizations. According to a study released last month by the National Center for Victims of Crime (www.ncvc.org), 27 percent of volunteer organizations surveyed did not conduct any type of background checks and the number one reason was the cost. NCNA has always recognized this concern and has partnered with MyBackgroundCheck.com to empower non-profit organizations with cost-effective technology to screen volunteers and a risk management program to protect their employees, volunteers, and the people they serve.

“The nonprofit sector thrives on the hard work of millions of volunteers. Performing thorough background checks on those volunteers allows nonprofit organizations to continue to operate with ethics and integrity. MyBackgroundCheck.com is a welcome partner in upholding these values,” said Audrey Alvarado, PhD., Executive Director of NCNA.

The VTS risk management program features a Denied Parties List. The list includes all volunteers who were found to have a criminal record or adverse behaviors reported by an organization. If an applicant is on the list, there is no need to perform an additional background check. This feature alone saves non-profits thousands of dollars each year. When background checks are necessary, MyBackgroundCheck.com provides flexible packages and a time-saving web interface to organize and track volunteer screening.

“Background screening is an often overlooked component of an overall risk management strategy. Through our VTS system we are providing important risk management features that enhance the overall effectiveness of any non-profit organization’s background screening program,” said Art Ferreira, Vice President of MyBackgroundCheck.com.
